Week 19

Halfway through the season and what a season it has been.  From Chelsea’s collapse to the rise of teams like Leicester, Stoke and Crystal Palace – nobody could have predicted the way this season has panned out so far.

From a statistical perspective, I’ve begun to investigate how I can combine Goals Conceded with Total Shot Ratio (on Target) to come up with a single combined metric.  If you’re a statistician, look away now.… More SMRTETA

Week 16

What a difference a week can make!

Last week I told you that Liverpool hadn’t really imposed themselves on my stats under Klopp yet, and this week – despite that celebration worthy triumph (2-2 draw with West Brom) at Anfield – they find themselves in the Top 3 for three of the statistics we track.  That’s progress folks and it really should speak to how one-sided the numbers were in favour of Liverpool at the weekend (they outshot WBA 28 to 4, had 70 percent possession, and completed 524 passes to 163).  … More SMRTETA

Week 15

Week 15 is here and bucks the trend of reporting in on every second week. In order to make things right, I’ll have a Week 16 update next week.

The Premier League continues to be an utter oddball for results this season. No one could’ve predicted Chelsea’s disastrously entertaining defence of their title (or lack thereof), Leicester continue to score goals for fun at the summit of the table, United are boring the socks off of us, and Liverpool have gone full gegen-press (never go full gegen-press).… More SMRTETA

Week 12

Here we go!

Another two weeks down in the Premier League and another two weeks of data to keep you warm and cozy as the Fall weather starts to kick in.  It’s interlull time again and yet another set of useless injuries are set to impact teams across the Premiership.

From an Arsenal perspective, it looks promising in terms of players returning from injury with the Ox, Ramsey and Bellerín all getting close.  It’ll hopefully be a welcome boost in a month that typically takes its toll on the Gunners.… More SMRTETA

Week 10

The fabled Week 10 is finally here and it’s easy to see why people tend to agree that by ten games in, trends start to emerge.  I’ll give a bit of a breakdown this week of some of the things I’m seeing and I’ll also start a new section – season predictions – which I’ll carry on until Week 38.

No better place to start than the top where despite a bore draw with bitter rivals United, City continue to lead almost all statistics being tracked.  … More SMRTETA
